NCG · NSS CAN GATEWAY

The gateway that connects the vehicle CAN bus to its IP network.

The NCG is NSS's CAN gateway: it acquires data from the CAN/J1939 bus of buses, trams and BRT vehicles, decodes it locally and distributes it over the vehicle's IP network in a manner compatible with the ITxPT standards — so that ticketing, passenger information and telemetry never need direct access to the CAN bus.

One unit. All the vehicle's data.

The NCG is NSS's CAN gateway: an onboard unit that acquires data from the CAN/J1939 bus of buses, trams and BRT vehicles, decodes it locally and distributes it over the vehicle's IP network in a manner compatible with the international ITxPT standards — allowing ticketing, passenger information, telemetry and fleet management to consume vehicle data over Ethernet/Wi-Fi, without any of those systems needing direct access to the CAN bus.

Beyond CAN decoding, the NCG integrates GNSS positioning fused with inertial sensors, management of the vehicle's digital and analogue inputs and outputs, local data storage and a web interface for configuration and diagnostics — all in a single unit, managed as one product.

Concept diagram: the vehicle's sensors and modules communicate over CAN/J1939 on two channels; the NCG concentrates and translates that data; the information then flows over IP to the onboard equipment. Generic vehicle, no supplier branding — not a capture of an installed system.

Capabilities

CAN/J1939 acquisition

Decodes vehicle CAN/J1939 bus data and publishes it on the IP network in real time; supports custom definitions for vehicles not covered by the FMS standard.

ITxPT network services

ITxPT compatible — connects to any onboard equipment that follows the standard, with no integration work.

GNSS, IMU and odometry fusion

Multi-constellation GNSS combined with an IMU (accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer) through a Kalman filter, for a speed and position estimate more robust than any single sensor.

Traction battery in real time

Reads the traction battery state of charge (SOC) over CAN and publishes it automatically to the onboard displays — aimed at electric fleets.

Vehicle inputs and outputs

8 digital channels configurable as input or output — 24 V-tolerant dry-contact inputs, open-drain outputs up to 500 mA —, 2 analogue current inputs and 1 configurable voltage input, for integration with equipment already in place. Tamper alarm on enclosure-opening detection.

Storage and web interface

A local database of CAN frames, decoded signals and history, with a real-time CAN monitor and REST API documentation.

Integration

ITxPT compatible

Qualifies the fleet for tenders that require compatibility with the ITxPT standard.

Works with what is already there

Publishes vehicle data onto the IP network without replacing the systems the operator already has installed.

Out-of-band network recovery

A multicast emergency channel that identifies a unit with a misconfigured IP address and resets its network settings to DHCP, with no need for physical access to the vehicle.

Zero-config and fault-tolerant

Starting up with no configuration file falls back to safe defaults; no frame is discarded because of a transmission error — it is always logged.

A product in production, multi-platform by design

The NCG is a product in production, on an automotive-grade industrial reference hardware platform — a 64-bit quad-core processor at 2.0 GHz, integrated multi-constellation GNSS, LTE cellular modem, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, two native CAN channels and IP67/IP69K protection (reference).

The NCG is portable to other embedded gateway platforms, with no need to change the CAN decoding logic.
